Meet Your Surgeon
I am a surgeon with a major interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Weight Loss Surgery, Hernia Surgery and all aspects of General Surgery.
After graduating with Honours from Monash University Medical School in 1997 and completing surgical training at the Austin hospital in Melbourne, I obtained my Fellowship in General Surgery with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007. I went on to complete advanced training in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.
Since returning to Australia in 2009, I have trained in various specialised weight loss and hernia centres in the United States, Europe and Australia.
I am a leading surgeon in laparoscopic hernia repair and gallbladder removal surgery. As an instructor, I have taught the latest techniques to current surgeons as well as surgical trainees. Over the years, I have performed and supervised more than 3,000 gallbladder removal operations.
With over 15 years experience in managing surgical patients, I endeavour to provide a comprehensive and personalised service of the highest standard to each of my patient.

Insurance and Cost
Insured Patients: We know medical billing and insurance can be confusing, our office staff works with patients every day to help them understand what costs, if any, may be required. No procedures or authorisations will be obtained without your direct input and knowledge. The out of pocket fees are dependant on the 'item numbers' related to your surgery, and we use the Known Gap scheme*. All our patients find our fees very fair given the high level of care we provide.
Self- Funding/ Uninsured Patients: We do not differentiate between patients with or without health insurance requesting a consultation with Mr Karametos. If an operation or hospital admission is required, this is usually organised through the public hospital system by your GP. Sometimes, uninsured patients decide to elect to use the private system. Please note there are three parts to the overall costs: private hospital fees (the greatest), surgeon fees, anaesthetist & surgical assistant fees. We will provide you with the 'item numbers' required for your surgery at your consultation along with a quote for surgeon fees, it will then be your responsibility to obtain quote from the hospital and the anaesthetist. After surgery, you will be able to make partial claim on the surgeon fees and anaesthetist & surgical assistant fees through Medicare.
Workcover/ DVA Patients: we offer No-Gap surgery to all eligible Workcover and DVA patients.
In-hospital checkups (usually daily) until discharge and post-operative appointment at the rooms are included.
* Subject to choice of insurance and level of cover.
